TCM Zurich in Kreis 6 | The Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a very old and holistic healing method and is primarily based on the philosophical concept of the Yin-Yang theory. This teaching describes the phenomena of nature and their relationships to each other and to the universe. It describes the permanent process of natural change. Although Yin and Yang are polar opposites in TCM, they are interdependent, complement and control each other, and can even transform into each other.

Yin & Yang and the Qi – the basic principles of TCM

The life energy Qi has various functions: It nourishes, warms, protects, transports, controls and transforms. In TCM, health is said to exist when the life energy is balanced and can exchange itself, i.e. flow unhindered. Illness occurs when the flow of energy is obstructed or blocked.

The Qi is kept in flow by a balanced interplay of Yin and Yang. Yin and Yang embody different principles of life, which are often regarded as opposite poles – Yin, for example, stands for calmness, passivity and coldness, while Yang is attributed with qualities of dynamism, activity and heat.

Traditional Chinese Medicine includes five different treatments, also known as the “five pillars.” They can be used individually or often in combination.

Pillar 1: Acupuncture and Moxibustion

Pillar 2: Massage (Tuina, Gua Sha, Cupping)

Pillar 3: Nutrition

Pillar 4: Medicines

Pillar 5: Coordination exercises (Qigong and Taiji)

In our practice Zurich we focus mainly on the first three pillars and offer the following treatment methods:

Tuina Massage

Tuina massage – also known as acupressure massage – differs from Western massage in that it focuses on the meridian system and acupuncture points. The focus is on the mobilization of Qi and the harmonization of Yin and Yang.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a pillar of TCM and is considered a treatment method with few side effects for various diseases. Fine needles are used to activate and restore the body’s own regulatory mechanisms, and self-healing powers are stimulated.

Cupping & Gua Sha

Cupping and Gua Sha are two TCM draining procedures that are mainly used for congestion, blockages, and tensions of all kinds. Typically, after the treatment redness can be seen for a few days on the treated skin areas.

Moxa therapy

Moxibustion is a stimulation therapy. With glowing herbs, heat is selectively applied to various acupuncture points – until the skin reddens. The heat stimulus regulates the flow of the life energy Qi and is mainly used in a state of “coldness” or “emptiness” according to TCM principles.

Fields of application

In principle, TCM treats all diseases, but most users in the West see it as a complementary procedure, at least for serious diseases. Even in today’s China, Western medicine and TCM are used in parallel. Treatment focuses on acute and chronic diseases and pain conditions.

  • Disease prophylaxis;
  • General complaints: e.g. tiredness, exhaustion, inner restlessness;
  • Pain in the musculoskeletal system: both acute pain conditions and chron. Problems such as arthritis, ischialgia, “frozen shoulder”, etc.
  • Neurology: e.g. sleep disorders, neuralgia, migraine, headaches;
  • Otolaryngology (ENT): Common colds;
  • Dermatology: itching, neurodermatitis, hair loss;
  • Pulmonology: allergies, bronchial asthma, recurrent bronchitis;
  • Gastroenterology: e.g., loss of appetite, gastritis, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease), chronic constipation or diarrhea;
  • Gynecology: menstrual problems, infertility, endometriosis, recurrent fungal infections;
  • Urology: recurrent urinary tract infections, chronic inflammation of the prostate;
